Scotts EcoSense Weed B Gon

Dear Scotts,

I am interested in receiving a material safety data sheet on your EcoSense Weed B Gon Weed Control Selective Herbicide.

I was unable to find an ingredient listing on your site, however, I did read that unused product should be disposed of at a "designated hazardous waste disposal site."

What is "eco-friendly" about your EcoSense line of products?

Your response is appreciated.

Thank you for your interest in Scotts and for the opportunity to help you with your lawn and garden endeavors.

As always, M. Smith, Scotts strives to provide the best possible service to our consumers. We accomplish this not only by providing superior products but also by providing the proper information to support these products. I hope you find the Material Safety Data Sheets helpful.

For an alternative to synthetic weed controls we have introduced EcoSense Weed B Gon Weed Control. This product is a fast-acting selective weed control ideal for anyone wishing to control weeds in their lawn without synthetic chemicals. The weed killer in EcoSense Weed B Gon Weed Control is iron, a naturally occurring mineral in soil and rocks. The broadleaf weeds die from iron toxicity. Some turf grasses may initially turn a dark green (almost black color) but will recover and return to their original green color.

Again, thank you for taking the time to contact us and for your interest in Scotts. Please feel free to contact our company anytime we may be of assistance.

  1. Did you actually get a msds? What molecular format is the iron in? Does the product use a nasty surfactant to promote the uptake of the iron preferentially in some weeds? Is it actually safer than the already quite safe auxin based selective herbicides? What about the LD50? Does it have an embittering agent for children to prevent accidental ingestion? Auxin based herbicides at least smell bad enough for a child to refuse ingestion. Seems like this could still be green washing.

  2. In case it helps, you can find the MSDS for anything that Home Hardware carries here http://msds.homehardware.ca/default.asp. The MSDS for Scott's product is http://msds.homehardware.ca/OpenRepositoryFile.asp?s=206010&v=2. (It's silly that companies act like these aren't widely available.)
