Dear Field Gate Organics,

I am trying to understand a bit more about the slaughter process for organic meats. Is the experience for the cows, pigs and lambs at the FGO Organic Processing plant more humane than regular slaughterhouses?

Hi Kristina:

The certified organic beef,  organic pork and organic lamb are slaughtered, processed and packaged at the  certified organic federal plant in Ingersoll which is a small federal establishment.

The organic animals are slaughtered on a one to one basis and stress is minimized in all handling practices and the use of electrical stimulation is prohibited.  The plant is certified with Pro-Cert and meets all Canadian organic  standards.  There is a CFIA inspector and veterinarian on site when the animals come off of the truck.

For more information on the organic standards please visit the Pro Cert website and the Canadian standards are listed under Standards and regulations on Pro-Cert’s home page.

Thank you for your inquiry.
